Fashion Backward

Iceland's most magical export has been pushing boundaries and experimenting with avant-garde since Lady Gaga was in diapers. Recording since the age of 11, this pretty creature's talent goes far beyond music. Join us as we take a peak at Bjork's fantastical style choices. Her 3 octave range, eclectic musical preferences and eccentric style have helped her to attain international popularity. This Icelandic pixie has been active in the industry since the age of 11, with her first record Bjork released in 1977. Her elementary school teacher recorded her singing Tina Charles' "I Love to Love" and sent it in to the only radio station in Iceland. The song was played to the nation and a recording deal soon followed. Two years later she formed a punk group called Spit and Snot and has since been in and out of various underground bands until her solo debut in 1992. It was then that she released the aptly titled Debut, marking her entrance to the industry as an adult on her own. It went platinum in the US, and so did her next two albums Post and Homogenic. It was with Homogenic that she began to move into more experimental pop, but held on to the poppy dance orientation and heavy instrumentation she was known so well for. She gained more attention for her videos than any of her singles though, and its clear that it was her aesthetic that had really gripped the minds of the public. The first song released from Debut was "Human Behavior," and the video was directed by Oscar winner Michael Gondry. This was the first of many collaborations to follow. Bjork has enjoyed major international success, but her style has always gotten mixed reviews, particularly from the Hollywood sect. She is avant-garde in the purest sense. She has no regard for trend or occasion, she dresses in a way that brings joy. She takes risks without a second thought and it seems that she truly could not care less about what anyone thinks. We all remember her infamous Oscar dress. The swan. Regarded as a serious fashion faux-pas, Bjork showed up to the elite awards ceremony dressed as the elegant white bird and even brought along an egg. Performers like Bjork are incredibly rare, particularly in the American music scene. Everyone is so tightly groomed and meticulously presented by their handlers that it often feels sterile. Bjork is different. With her Eastern Asian features and pixie appeal she often manages to pull off obtuse, almost bizarre things only to have people offer up the explanation of, "Oh, well she's Bjork." Her talent has gotten her a free pass from most, with people never really understanding but still appreciating the effort she puts forth. Her music and style mirror one another in that way. The attention to detail in her songs is astronomical. From tiny bells to nearly inaudible whispers, Bjork has even said so herself -- that in order to catch it all you must put a microscope to it. She places the same emphasis on details when it comes to her wardrobe. Before there was Lady Gaga, there was Bjork. Creativity clearly is her driving force which can be seen deeply ingrained in her musical stylings as well as her outlandish looks. She pushes boundaries and is often seen sporting bold neon hues, metallic accent pieces and feathers. The cut of her clothing is never ordinary, she is a living breathing runway show. From collaborations with Portishead, Tricky and Timbaland to Jeremy Scott and the late Alexander McQueen. She's never sold out and she's never apologized, Bjork is a true visionary. As cliche as that may be, it's true.
