Miista Talks - Creativity, Craftsmanship and Collaboration
We are in the last two weeks of our concept pop up in New York and last night we hosted the first of a series of ‘Miista Talks’, panel discussions promoting talented creative women.
The talk was inspired by our AW19 collection, which was designed to re-engage and reconcile natural materials with technology, in appreciation of collaboration, creativity and craftsmanship. We have worked very closely with our craftspeople to incorporate high tech fabrics into sophisticated yet wearable designs. Our makers & innovators, who work with their bare hands are a key factor in our design process and we wanted to deep dive into this topic and explore how other creators use their hands.
We were joined by a talented group of women to discuss their careers and how they work in each of their mediums.
Our panel included.
Colleen Herman who is a multi-talented artist living in New York City. Her professional life is incredibly varied and allows creativity in a multitude of disciplines, from working as a Creative Director to teaching students at Parsons School of Design.
Emma Kohlmann born in New York now based in Massachusetts. Her watercolours- and sumi ink works are characterised by vibrant colours. She also publishes her own records, zines, scarfs and shirts.
New York-based Ceramicist Simone Bodmer Turner who approaches the art of sculpture through a multi-contextual lens, creating other-worldly, modern pieces.
Brittany Asch a unique artist who transforms flowers and leaves in unique floral arrangements that have won over the fashion industry.
Finally Laura Villasenin, Miista’s founder and head designer and moderated by Emilia Petrarca, Fashion News writer from the cut.
Here are some highlights from the talks.
What is your ideal environment to work in, paint me a picture?
How do you approach collaboration and what does it mean to you more broadly?
What do you do when you get the equivalent of ‘writer's block’, how do you embrace it?
How do you know when you have finished a piece?
How do you approach social media and sharing your work?
Here are some quotes from the evening.
Laura Villasenin, ‘When things get older they just get more beautiful’.
Brittany Asch, ‘It’s only until you work by yourself that you realise your own resourcefulness’.
